Most of my right leg was numb all the way down to my 3 rt. toes causing me to fall all the time. My leg felt like a tree stump I drug around. It was at this point that I was diagnosed with 2 bulging discs, L4 & L5, an anteriorly rotated pelvis resulting in sciatica and was told I would need surgery. I was told it would require a 1.5 - 2 yr. recovery period, I may not fully recover and would probably not work again.
I remembered a friend telling me off and on for many years about something called somatics, how gentle it was, and how much she saw it help people. So she lead me to an HSE, "Hanna Somatics Educator" in California. It took me 11 Alleves and 5 prescribed muscle relaxers to endure the plane ride although I was still in pain.
After meeting with the Hanna Somatics Educator (HSE) for 8 consecutive visits, where we barely had any physical contact and I took no medications, I could then bathe and dress myself with much less pain. I could also sit, drive, and brush my teeth at the sink with much less pain! I then learned to do these gentle exercises by myself returning home on the plane with no need for pain relievers and could sit in my chair. The doctor could not believe how much better I was in such a short time w/o medication or surgery. We both wondered if it would last.
As long as I did my exercises every morning before I started my day and each nite before going to bed I could now function fully, with very little pain, and sleep soundly each nite w/o pain interruption. I did this on my own for 5 months before all of the pain left my body and a portion of the numbness in my leg went away, affording me more control over my foot.
All by myself I continued doing the gentle somatic exercises every morning and every nite before bed for 4 more months. At the end of the next 4 months all feeling returned to my rt. leg, foot & toes and all nerve damage had healed.
I have no residual affects.
At this point I reduced my daily somatics to one time per day. My total recovery time was 9 months. I now try and do somatics a few minutes each day just to be certain I keep myself fully mobile and agile. I am now better than I was before and can now hike a mountain, am fully mobile, pain free, and feel more agile than I was before the injury.
I then began the 3 yr. clinical program at the Novato Institute in California to become certified as an HSE. There are only 150 Hanna Somatics Educators worldwide.
BR Somatics opened it's doors in late August of 2007. It's been so rewarding to see people like myself, that had no hope, recover utilizing somatics. It is still AMAZING! to me even though I know the person will be helped! It is a gift to both of us! And it is this gift that my business partner and fellow somatics educator, Barbara Rathbone and I, are offering you.
